Lend Me A Tenor To Close 6th August

I received news yesterday tat Lend Me a Tenor at the Gielgud Theatre will close prematurely on August 6th. If you haven’t read my review of this show you can find it by clicking here.

The show’s synopsis reads as follows It’s 1934, and the world’s greatest tenor Tito Merelli has come to Cleveland, Ohio, to save its Grand Opera Company by singing Otello. When he is unexpectedly incapacitated, Max, the Opera Director’s meek assistant, is given the daunting task of finding a last-minute replacement. Chaos ensues – including a scheming soprano, a tenor-struck ingénue, a jealous wife and the Cleveland Police department. and what greets you when you see the show is a musical with a heart, courage and a brain. Lend Me a Tenor is a modern musical that harks back to classic musicals and is filled with laugh a minute farce and a cast that has not one weak link.

I urge you to go and see this fantastic show before it leaves the West End. I’m hoping maybe a tour will happen as I think this kind of show would do fantastically in regional theatres. I’m just sorry more people won’t get to see it in its current home at the Gielgud.

Maybe one day, theatre fans, British audiences will embrace new musical theatre (either completely new or yet unseen by them) in the way that Broadway audiences do and shows like Lend Me a Tenor, Spring Awakening, Hair and many more will not close prematurely because a British audience doesn’t “get” them.
